The theif comes only to steal and to kill and to destroy; but I have come that they may have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. John 10:10

Asa Joel

Asa Joel
Sunday October 23
11:53am
8lbs 13oz

21.5inches

The story: Saturday, Andrew and I took the boys to the zoo.  It's a ton of walking and lots of hills, so I was hoping it would speed labor along - and it did!  I felt very normal the rest of the day, though.  Around 11:30pm, I woke up with an upset stomach and bad nausea.  I was up for probably an hour with a few hard contractions and then went back to sleep.  I woke up a little after 1am feeling the same way.  When I laid back down, the contractions got harder - 10 minutes apart.  I woke Andrew up on the third one because I couldn't handle the pain of the contractions in my back.  I got up out of bed and they got closer together - like 4 minutes apart.  I knew this had to be real!  We talked to the on-call nurse in Labor & Delivery (Andrew talked, I couldn't talk) who said to come on in.  I tried my hardest to talk Andrew through what we needed to take while not falling on the floor in pain.  :)  Thankfully, my bag was already packed.  Our sweet neighbor came to stay with the boys and off we went.  On the way, the contractions went to every 2 minutes ... I thought I was going to die from the pain.  When they first checked me, I was still a loose 1cm and 80% effaced.  I was devastated!!  I couldn't believe what a wimp I felt like, but all the pain was in my back.  So the OB on call said to admit me around 5:30 or 6 and I got some pain meds that just made me feel drunk.  They did mostly take the edge off the pain.  We got in a room around 7, I think and I got the epidural around 8am.  Right after that, I was 3cm and they broke my water (I changed to 4cm then).  Less than 2 hours later, I was at 6cm and an hour after that it was time to push!  I couldn't believe how fast it went.  I think we started pushing shortly after 11am and it didn't take even an hour to get Asa out.  He was much bigger than the OB and nurse thought he'd be!

I had wanted this whole time to go into labor on my own so that I'd have a chance at a VBAC.  I'm so thankful that God gave me this opportunity.  I had a million reasons for not wanting to be cut open again and, after just a few days of recovery, I can say I feel very justified in ALL of those reasons!!  I'm still amazed at how fast he came and how fast we got to come home.  Asa is such a sweet blessing and Aidan & Jordan are really doing pretty well with having him here (it's still early, though!).  More pictures later!

Dry spell

I'm not going to apologize for not blogging any more!  I'm just going to trust that you all know that I have kids to keep up with.  :)

Right now, I'm praying the 3rd comes any day (minute) now.  Asa is measuring a week ahead and last week (at 36 weeks) he weighed in at 7lbs 3oz.  So he's done cooking and we're ready for him to be here in our arms!  My belly is tired  :)  Friday at the OB, I was 1cm dilated and 25% effaced.  I had an appointment today, but had to cancel because Jordan woke up early this morning throwing up.  He's seems better this afternoon, so I'm calling it a bug (and a thankfully short-lived one) and waiting to see if Aidan does it tomorrow.  Anyway, about Asa... I'm pushing my OB for a vbac, so I have to go into labor (or at least significantly progress on my own) before the 39 week mark.  Otherwise, it's a repeat c-section and I'd really rather not.  I cannot imagine not being able to pick up A & J for 6 weeks after Asa comes.  I think that would devastate all of us.

I wanted to post before Asa comes because I know I've totally neglected this blog in keeping updates about the boys!  Here are my favorite sayings right now:
Aidan: "uh-oh! what gonna do now?"  -- usually talking to a car on the edge of some surface, hilarous!
Aidan: "bye-bye! have a good day!"
Jordan: "um, nope" which has developed "uh, wah" which means 'yes' or 'uh, yeah'
Jordan: "Aidan Jordan get out their beds, Mommy lock door"  -- ok, longer explanation... We had been locking their door for months because they were coming out just to come out in the middle of the night.  Then they started laying in front of the door calling for us or just banging on it (thankfully, not in the middle of the night, but at bedtime and at early-wake-up-brother rising).  So we switched it to a baby gate with the door partially open.  We spent many weeks with them hanging out in front of the gate calling us or just standing there waiting to see us walk by before they understood they were really supposed to stay in bed.  So then the gate came down and we would just pull the door to (ok, I don't know how to type that - "pull it to" - do y'all say that?  pull it to what?  it means that I don't actually shut the door, I just leave it mostly closed...).  Which, by the way, is what I've been doing at naptime for months!  And it worked well for a week or two and now we're back to night-wakings and sometimes just rebelling at bedtime.  Well, we have 2 year olds - can we really expect much more?  Spanking is not worth it at bedtime and I don't want to leave a day on that note, so we threaten to lock the door instead of spanking if they get out of bed.  So there's the long explanation.  I just was amazed that he used the word "their" last night.  And Aidan doesn't use 's' if it's at the beginning of a word.  So we don't swing, swim, or slide... we 'wing, 'wim, and 'lide!

Our dynamic of which twin is in charge is so weird.  Aidan now has at least an inch on Jordan, maybe an inch and a half, and I think he knows it.  He's been pushing a lot lately.  He pushed Jordan down yesterday because he was frustrated with him.  Usually, he just likes to mess with Jordan - tackling and roughhousing - but we've got to work on not using our strength against our brother.  Jordan, on the other hand, bosses Aidan constantly.  He's the more verbal one, so it's "no, Aidan, do this" a lot.  The other day at Andrew's parents' house, Jordan was fussing at Aidan about being in "mine" car.  And while we were trying to explain that we share everything and both cars are just fine for either boy, Aidan got out of his car and got in the other one.  I'd love to know what his motivation was.  I mean, I'm all about keeping the peace, if you really don't care which toy you have.  But I don't want Aidan doing what Jordan says just because Jordan said it.  And it doesn't make sense when Aidan can form-tackle Jordan the way he does.  It's a very interesting relationship.

We had a day where we just played in Mommy's old dance shoes and Aidan clearly didn't like the flash on my camera.  He started smiling like that in all the pictures because I was laughing at him  :)  And then he wore those yellow ballet slippers the rest of the morning.

Kids' Scripture Memory

Our church just brought a children's pastor on board this summer and he is raising expectations for all the kids.  We no longer have just "childcare", we have children's worship and large group assembly and small group discussions.  We also have an hour where the kids are led through stations of crafts, songs, lessons, and scripture memory (there might be more, but I forget).  It has been a pretty big undertaking to get all this going as right now we are a mobile church - meeting in a high school with only the gym for the kiddos.  And I felt like my boys were young to be participating, but LOVE the first "artwork" they brought home, of course... It was about Abraham's descendents being numerous as the stars and they just stuck star stickers on the page (but Jordan lined his up like a rainbow across the page).  AND they have totally learned the scriptures!  Unfortunately, they're a bit timid (I guess that's what they got from me) and won't actually say the verses when they are supposed to during Bible study hour.  But they will do the motions.  But we say them every night before bed after we say prayers, so we know they can do it.  so here is the proof!!  I apologize if you can't understand their words... they are only 2, after all.  But here is John 3:16 ~ For God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life; and Genesis 1:1 ~ In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.  (Jordan is on the left, Aidan is on the right)

Chicken Buckets

making a tent with furniture and a bedsheet is a new favorite game of theirs, but they call it "under"
playing with Daddy in the "under"

Before I forget, I wanted to say that my new favorite thing the boys say is "chicken nuggets" because it comes out "chicken buckets"!!  Too cute.  They have all kinds of new words that I don't remember teaching them... Almost everyday they come out with something new, it's amazing!  Right now, though, everything is "me do it".  Aidan actually says "I" most of the time, but Jordan says "me".  The best is when I hand him something at supper, like a fork; he'll say, "me have lellow fork."  I mean, that's a whole sentence right there.  It has helped some with a potty training slump we're in... I think it's partly getting over a sickness we had, but they just don't want to go (Aidan especially).  So I've been playing up the "you're a big boy and can do it all by yourself" thing.  And if they sit on the little potty seats, I don't have to pick them up (which helps me not have contractions).  They associate things that I don't anticipate.  Like Saturday, we said we were all going to the farmers' market and we would see the fire truck (there's a fire station right there and the door is almost always open).  Jordan told me that Mimi & Grandpa would be there to see the fire truck, too (because they were visiting when we last went).  It's just such a miracle to watch them grow and learn and develop skills and language and imagination.  And potty training is a day-to-day struggle.  I'm trying to (and not doing a great job) make it less of a big deal without losing my enthusiasm for them doing a good job - it's hard!  They are still so young, but they clearly know what they're doing.  Parenting is such a hard (but rewarding) job and sometimes I forget that tomorrow is just another day of the same.  This is just my life right now, there is not really a "next thing" that I just need to be done with this in anticipation of.  I'm not sure why that is so hard to grasp, but I know I'm not alone.  And being pregnant doesn't help much  :)
  Aidan wearing Daddy's shoes
 Jordan riding his "bike"

They are playing more together now than they ever have.  They wrestle and chase and yell most of the day, actually.  And along with developing imagination, we've been having some bad dreams.  We were all sick a couple weeks ago with fever virus, ear infections, sinus infections... kept us down for more than a week.  And we thought Jordan's sleep crying started back up then as part of the earaches.  But it continued after everyone was well and I was confused about it.  (He doesn't wake up as far as I can tell, but he whimpers and cries in his sleep.  It's awfully pitiful.)  And then finally, one night after our bedtime prayers, he wouldn't get in his bed.  He kept saying "mommy daddy bed".  I didn't let him, of course, but it was so heartbreaking to see that face!  So after talking with my discipler about it, we've started teaching him to say the name of Jesus when he gets scared in bed at night.  Andrew was at a meeting one night and so I taught them both to say "Jesus, protect me."  And they remembered!  And two days later, Aidan was laying in bed while Jordan went potty and he said to me, "prayers. talk God."  I was so excited!!  I told him that yes, we talk to God when we pray!  I know he's young to understand the concept of God completely, but wouldn't it be awesome if they started to get it at this age?!  And I think we've successfully countered the bad dreams with talking to God!  I'm sure we'll have more rounds of bad dreams, but Jordan's definitely been sleeping better.
during the sick week, Aidan slept so much better sitting up - this was nap on the worst day
like Jordan would really sleep in his room alone... we'll have to work on that, I guess.  but this day it was the couch with his favorite new "lovey" - a giant elephant pillow

Baby Asa: My last appointment was 2 1/2 weeks ago and I passed my glucose test.  whoohoo!  I asked Dr. P when the next ultrasound would be since I don't know what a normal pregnancy is like and she said there usually isn't one.  I was a little bit devastated, but she said after the anatomy scan, they don't usually do any more unless there is a good reason.  I told her that was fine, that I had just been curious since he was measuring so big last time and I was/am getting so gigantic and uncomfortable this early in the game.  So she listened to his heartbeat on the doppler (always around 150-160) and then measured my belly to see what it was measuring.  She didn't tell me what that measurement was, just agreed that I was getting big and said well, let's go ahead and get a growth scan.  I took that to mean that I was measuring huge - and I was right  :)  The ultrasound tech said Dr. P wrote down that I measured 30 weeks.  I was 25w3d.  Fabulous.  So then I got to see Asa on the ultrasound and he's a chubby little thing with plenty of fluid around him.  He measured 26w6d.  10 days ahead.  I have no idea what this means... but the first time we saw him, it was 3 days ahead, then 5 days ahead, now 10 days ahead.  I'm 28 weeks today and still feeling gigantic, although the week of sickness knocked me back about 3 lbs.  Asa is a very active little thing (well, big thing) and kicks just as hard as A & J ever did.  Because my placenta is anterior (in the front), I feel more kicking inside than I did with A & J.  It doesn't really make a difference, it's just more uncomfortable for me.  But I still feel plenty of good strong kicks on the outside, too.  I go back this Thursday, so I'm interested to see what Dr. P thinks about Asa's size and growth and whether or not we'll get any more ultrasounds!  I'm thinking we may get to meet him in person a few weeks before his actual date  :)  We'll see.

2 year olds!

My sweet boys turned 2 yesterday!!  It has gone by so fast.  These precious little boys are growing and learning so much that it's hard to keep up!  Andrew's grandparents sent them each a little money, so yesterday morning I took the boys to find a present for them with that money.  We didn't spend all of it, but we got a great little Thomas the Tank Engine set (that came with Thomas & Percy - so thankful there were 2 engines in there) and it's a good addition to the tracks we already had.  After nap, Andrew's parents and my parents came over and we opened presents.  We gave them the Little People Construction set - which they love because it came with a dump truck & and wrecking ball truck (all cheap from a yard sale, but in great condition).  I wrapped up the Thomas set - which they, of course, love because it's Thomas and has a train station and a train-wash (like a carwash) and a little thing that looks like it's dumping coal onto the trains.  My mom had gotten two big beach towels monogrammed with their names, which they recognized!  Andrew's mom got them bike helmets (they love their tricycles) & bells and paint with water books.  She also got them each a shirt from the boutique she works at - one has a mixer truck and the other has fire truck on it.  They showed very little emotion through the whole gift-opening part, but they played non-stop with the toys the rest of the night!  The living room is still a mess of toys.  Oh, and they've been wearing the helmets around the house because they have Lightning McQueen on them.

 Daddy helping us open gifts
 The new Thomas set
the construction set
Then our friends Scott & Lindsay and the Napps came over for supper.  Scott & Lindsay got each of the boys a gift card to Build-a-Bear!  We've never been in there before, but heard it's fun.  So I'm sure there will be a post on that later!  The Napps have a little boy, Davis, whose birthday is today!  We didn't exchange gifts because that would just be silly.  But Davis did enjoy playing with A&J's new toys and they all play so well together.
We grilled hamburgers and had all kinds of other food.  Lindsay brought us a cake - a triple chocolate, almost obscene cake - that was completely yummy.  And we made ice cream (by we, I mean Andrew's dad) that was also very yummy.  I ate way too much.  The boys did, too, they were bouncing off the walls!!  They are never that animated when other people are at the house!

In other news, Aidan is potty trained!! Whoohoo!!  He was just ready.  He's still wearing a diaper or pull-up and wetting at night, but most naps he wakes up dry (although, I haven't let him sleep in undies yet).  And last night while everybody was at the house, he stayed dry the whole time.  And he stayed dry all through church today, too.  We definitely still have some accidents (he pooped in his undies as soon as we got home), but that much progress only took about 3 weeks.  So I'm a happy mama.  Jordan is in pull-ups.  I'm not the biggest fan, but it seems to help him relax about the whole thing.  He just can't go very long in between potty breaks.  But when he does tell me he has to go pee, he's right.  So we're making slow progress with him.

And we got the results from Andrew's bloodwork and he does not have the big E antigen!  So baby Asa will not have it and it won't be an issue with any other babies we might have.  Praise God for that!

The boys and I all go to the doc this week for regular checks.  I can't wait to see how tall these guys are - I think it's around 35inches.  We know they are still about 30lbs each, but they've slimmed up a lot.  I don't have an ultrasound or anything, so I'm a little sad about that.  But I guess that's "normal."

boy #3!

We're having another boy!  I was pretty sure I'd seen it when the u/s tech first put the wand to my belly, but then she went looking and it wasn't hard to find!  :)  So baby Asa will be making his arrival sometime in October.  He's measuring 5 days ahead!!!  It's pretty standard in my husband's family to have big (really big) babies - that's why no one was really shocked at how big our twin boys were - and my sister and I were not small babies.  I'm also fine with him being big because he's definitely coming at 39 weeks or earlier, so being big could be helpful.  He's a very active little thing.  We watched him kick and roll and everything.  My placenta is in the front this time, so that explains the lack of feeling movement.  I have felt a lot more this week, though.
My BP is still low, so that's good.  My OB set a number today that she doesn't want it get to, so if it starts creeping up then we know the threshold we have.  But so far so good!
My antibodies are still numbering low, so that is also fabulous.  She didn't even feel the need to draw blood this time, she'll do it in 4 weeks at the next appt.  Andrew, however, did have to get blood drawn to see if he carries the big E antigen.  He felt pretty awkward getting bloodwork done at my OB's office, but a daddy has to do what a daddy has to do!  So we should find out about that at the next appt, too.  She seemed to think she'd be seeing much more often after this 4 week stretch, so we will just continue to pray for and be thankful for the quietness of this pregnancy.

Well it's only been 2 months since I posted last...
The truth: blogging has taken a backseat to a lot of things!  It's hard for me to write about the things going on in our lives because we have such great adventures everyday!  But then I also don't feel like our lives are really all that news-worthy, so I usually just skip the blogging.
So here's where we are now...
I'm 18 weeks pregnant with baby #3!  We find out boy or girl next week and we cannot wait.  We settled on a boy name (which is weird because I don't like a lot of boy names), but can't agree on a girls name.  I feel like it's a boy, but that really doesn't mean anything.  This baby either moves a lot less (well, definitely less than 2 in there together) or is just not as strong... or I have more padding... or all of the above.  So I'm also anxious to get those good strong kicks (and wondering if it's a girl).
A & J are talking like crazy.  Jordan is a hilarious little parrot.  He literally repeats everything we say - maybe just to hear himself say it.  But he's pretty good with words.  Aidan is not as good with saying words, but he does try.  He's harder to understand because if he says more than one word, all words in the phrase are shortened to the first syllable or mushed into one-syllable.  Also pretty hilarious.  They are learning to ride their tricycles, which is so cute.  They are obsessed with sitting in the backseat (3rd row) of the van - which is good because they'll be moving back there, come fall.  We are going to potty train in about 2 weeks - yikes!!
We have also started foster care classes, held by Lifeline.  Lifeline is a Christian organization that provides social workers to foster families partnering with DHR.  We are being obedient to the call of James 1:27 to take care of orphans.  We are excited about this opportunity to minister to foster children's hearts and to their families.
Because of all this new life coming into our house, Lord willing, we (mostly I) have been rearranging furniture and trying to plan where in the house everyone will go!  So moving stuff around and cleaning out have taken a lot of my time.
So that's where we are!  I'm sure I'll post again next week when we find out boy or girl.

The Zoo

Today was our first real trip to the zoo!  I haven't been to our local zoo in years and I remember it being a little sad and outdated.  But I had heard a new section just opened and Andrew's mom is on Spring Break, so we went!  The boys had a blast!  Like any little boys, mine love animals.  Big animals, little animals, any living & moving creature.

 Macaws

 Kangaroos
 pretty Black Swans
 Monkeys!

 playing the djembes! (African drums)
Zebras (or as Aidan says, "beezras")
 Giraffes
 Fish
 up close and personal
Why is there a tractor at the zoo, you ask?  Because we live in Alabama, I say.  And it was right next to the petting area (stinky goats and such).
The newest area is calls Trails of Africa, so we got to see an elephant pretty close up.  This zoo's elephants died a few years ago and, evidently, they've been without them since.  Now they have 2 and have 2 more coming this spring/summer.  The new Africa section made me miss Animal Kingdom so much!!  (I worked at DisneyWorld for a semester in college.  Fan.tas.tic.)  They had good music playing and a new kids' play area, complete with new cafe and tables in the giant tiki hut.  That's where the drums were, too.  We rode the train, which the boys loved, of course.  And we even got a few free tokens from a friend we saw, so we rode the carousel, too.  It was kind of an expensive day because we bought lunch there - didn't want to carry lunch around with us - and we didn't take the stoller in, so the boys did a LOT of walking!  They're sleeping soundly as I type.  I think a membership would be fabulous for this summer!

Learning our colors

I've never posted video before, but we have a great video camera & I just loaded the software on my new laptop.  I took a couple of cute videos today - we had a lazy day with Andrew at home - and wanted to see if I could share.  This sounds crazy... but the boys are learning their colors & doing really well!  We have the Preschool Prep videos (Meet the... letters, numbers, colors, shapes, etc.) and watch them every week or so, purely as educational entertainment.  I never expected these boys to actually learn any of this early - I just thought it would help them learn.  But they are really good with their letters and colors.  See if you can hear Aidan saying them!

Grace

Recently, the pastor of our church explained the difference between grace and mercy this way:
Grace is what you receive when you don't deserve it. Mercy is what you don't receive when you do deserve it.

It has really stuck with me and I think I'll paint it on a wall in my house somewhere.
When I think about all that I do receive from God that I don't deserve... that's everything.  Husband, kids, loving family & friends, house, car, etc.  He has also challenged us to define a blessing as anything that allows us to see Jesus.  So that throws a lot of "things" that we normally call blessings out of the category.  But I believe anything that we are given by God (which is everything) is Grace.

I read a blog by Ann Voskamp who is the author of the new best-selling book 1000 Gifts: A Dare to Fully Live Right Where You Are.  The blog is A Holy Experience and she always signs her posts "All is grace, Ann".  I never understood her thing about grace until our pastor gave the above explanation.

Talk about a new level of thankfulness!  If everything we have is God's grace bestowed upon us... how humbling!  If all we received was "blessings" from God - just gifts without deeper purpose - we could easily walk around feeling good about ourselves and how much God loves us.  And never be moved.  But if everything we have is touchable grace of God, how can we not be moved to our knees?  Truly, His grace is enough.

Time Flies

These sweet baby boys of mine are definitely too big to be called "babies"!  If the running didn't convince me, the new words have.  Jordan is repeating everything we say (at least trying), even in phrases.  He gets a lot of it right, too.  But he's so impressed us with putting things together, like, 'uh-oh tractor' and 'bye-bye daddy'.  Aidan does the same, but he usually only repeats what he's asked to; although, he's definitely listening to everything.  *The tractors go 'uh-oh' because they insist on watching the movie Cars everyday.  It's amazing what they pick up on!  They just started making the tractors tip over one day.*  We have a couple of DVDs that are teaching tools - one is letters, one is numbers, one is colors, one is shapes.  And they know those as they see them on the DVDs.  They recognize letters everywhere else.  They know what numbers are, but they only say a couple of them in books and things.  They know a few shapes outside of the DVD.  If you ask them to find a specific color ball (from the ballpit), they will almost always get it right!  But they'll almost always tell you the wrong color if you ask what color a ball is.  Funny, isn't it?  Their new favorite tricks are 1. to drag their little folding chairs over to the counter and stand in them to "help" me cook, 2. to put a finger on their lips and shush people (SO cute), 3. to say Daddy & Mommy instead of dada & mama!!  The last one is mostly Aidan, but Jordan has proven that he can.  The really fun part is that after he got the hang of Da-dee, he went on to Ma-mee (which came out mee-ma for a day or two), and has now decided that all names should end with a y.  Like Bubba became Bu-bee and Aidan is sometimes Ai-dee.  I do correct him on his own name, but it's really funny to listen to him say all of those.
I'm just continually amazed at what they can do and learn.  It kills me how fast time flies with these little guys.  I try to keep it in perspective throughout our days because I know that soon I won't be able to carry them around... or they won't want me to.  Sometimes I just sit and watch them and try to etch those moments in my mind forever and try to just be thankful to God for these little gifts.  I am also continually amazed that God has entrusted me with 2 precious babies at once.  (I know, they're not babies!!)  What a priveledge I have to watch these two connected, but separate lives grow up together!  I pray God will help me impress on them how special their bond is and how He has blessed them in that way.
By the way, one of their favorite books is The Jesus Storybook Bible.  It's a fabulous little storybook of Bible stories that says how they reflect God's plan to send Jesus in the "great rescue."  Mostly, they like to look at the big fish that swallowed Jonah, but I pray they will grow to love and read those stories and that it will help us lead them to the cross of Christ.

Baby Ball Pit

We're on our 2nd baby sized ball pit - the first was a $5 Little People train engine that got a hole in one of the panels.  The second is a minivan with no back to it that we were given for Christmas (how did they know we needed one?!).  These are a bit much for our little house, but perfect for the winter weather.  Well the minivan is a good bit smaller than the train was and Aidan lets me know it's not big enough for him to sit in with his brother.  So they fight about it and then quit playing with it most days.  I told Andrew that I'd been thinking about opening up the pack-n-play and putting the boys in it and then throwing all the balls in on top of them, just to keep them contained one day.  So this weekend, we did it!  They thought it was hilarious!  Much more room than the minivan ball pit AND the balls don't roll out when the kids are little too big for it.

And everything is more fun when you don't have to wear clothes!
Did I mention the mesh sides that make your face squish in funny ways?

Even Lion had to try it  :)

sweet brother kisses

Come on, Spring!

Bring on the warm weather!!  We will be so spoiled if this warm weather fades back into winter.  It makes our days so much more fun (and fast) when we can spend it outside.  Sunday afternoon we went to the playground in Mt. Laurel.  The boys refused to nap after church (I tried for an hour), but fell fast asleep as soon as we got in the car.  It's only a 10 minute drive, so I let them sleep 20 mins longer once we got there.  But they did really well, considering that was all the nap they got ALL day.  They LOVE slides.  Especially the big kid slides that they're technically too young for.  Fearless.
